FAQs
How many practices will be in the Pelagonius family
5-8. Our USP is that we are of a size where we have the strength of good systems and people to help, but without needing layers of management and barriers between the leaders and the people seeing pets on a day to day basis.
So does a clinical director have complete freedom over the practice
Yes, you run the practice each day, you will have a badge that says “Boss” :-). Drugs, uniforms, colours, staffing, marketing, new equipment, etc are all things that you make decisions on. The things that we keep the same between all practices are the Practice Management System, vet wholesaler and the lab supplier to allow us to share info and data (and stock if needed 🙂 ). But if you want to stock your preferred NSAID, whilst another practice uses a different one – then go for it.
Why the midlands
In order our us to support each other we need to be physically close. Zoom and teams are great (and we do use them), but nothing beats personal connection and physically visiting each other to see and talk about things
What happens when we disagree
I’m sure we will on some things – that can be good and can drive us to better things. The most important thing is that we have the same goals and vision, which is why we spend lots of time and effort making sure we are the right fit for each other to start with
How much money does a CD need to put it
Nothing. When we open a new practice, you will take home a salary lower than you could earn as a CD in a busy corporate practice. This lower salary is what buys you the equity in the practice. You will have a 5% share in the practice on day one, which will steady increase over the next 10 years. This allows us to provide a sustainable practice financially in those first 18 months before the business breaks even.
What happens if I want to leave
We hope that you will stay until you are old and grey, but if choose to leave, Pelagonius will purchase your shares back at the current market value.
Why the name Pelagonius
Pelagonius is named after a roman citizen in the xth century and one of the first people to set down some scientific principles about the health of animals and how to treat their diseases. It seemed appropriate for a veterinary company, and I also love Roman history.
What are the values and beliefs of Pelagonius
– lots of companies write their values on the wall and they can all seem a bit same. Eg. To be the best vet practice, or give the best vet care, etc.
– Like almost all of us in the profession, I became a vet for the simple reason that I wanted to help heal animals. I want to be their voice and their advocate in the world so that they can have long, healthy lives in companionship with their humans. Along my career journey, I have learnt that there are lots of different ways to do things and lots of different people who all do and think differently. I have also become frustrated at how we seem to attract so many people as young trainee vets and nurses but seem to drive so many of them away, so that the levels of people still in the job 10 years after qualifying is often pathetically low. I want us to be able to be in this profession for life (if we want too). This doesn’t mean that it is the same all the time. People will move, and take breaks for family or health reasons, but we should be able to nurture our teams and give them the recognition and support that we all need. I dont just mean a decent salary, and pizza days, but more structural things like allowing everyone to have some control and autonomy in their daily job, continual life long training, along with being able to recognise and appreciate our team.
We aim to be provide a sustainable career that makes you smile everyday when you come to work.
We understand that in order to DO great things in veterinary practice, you have to BE a positive and authentic and empathetic person first and foremost. If you don’t believe in what you do, or that the company you work for has yours and your patients best interests at heart, then how can you DO awesome veterinary things. And this is something that doesn’t work successfully if you just fake it. You have to continually understand why you work in veterinary practice, and keep practising and learning skills and knowledge to BE the best you can.
– So we don’t have a complicated mission statement that we write on the wall to prove that we’re a good company and we‘ve ticked that box. Instead, we invite you to just BE……
- Be the best version of you
- Be more veterinary
- Be awesome
- Be compassionate
- Be better than you were yesterday
